After you collect your hire car from Green Motion Kaunas Bus and Train Station, we are sure that you will be eager to get your car on the road and explore the delights and unique attractions of Kaunas.

Enjoy your car hire in Kaunas

If this is your first time driving a car in Lithuania, our best advice is to stay calm and take your time. As mentioned, remember to drive on the right. We would also recommend for your own peace of mind to hire a GPS to ensure you can easily navigate around the city (ask at the rental counter for details).

If travelling by motorway, the speed limit will vary from 130 (summer) or 110 (winter) km/h depending on the time of the year. The speed limit in built up roads is 50 km/h. For your own safety it is important that you obey local speed and traffic restrictions. Be prepared if you are planning on visiting Lithuania in the winter as the country is likely to have snow on the ground and temperatures plummet to -25 C.

In an emergency, Lithuanian Emergency Services can be contacted by calling 112 or alternatively you can contact the fire brigade on 01, the police on 02 and an ambulance on 03.

Do I need to leave a deposit when renting my car?

Yes, in all cases the main driver will be required to leave a deposit which will be taken by the method of pre-authorisation from the credit card presented. The level of pre-authorisation taken is dependent on the type of insurance purchased and the agreed excess. Typically the level of pre-authorisation required will mirror the level of agreed excess. In the cases where the hirer has selected a zero excess option, a small deposit / pre-authorisation will be required to cover any traffic violations including parking and speeding offences that may occur while the hire vehicle is in the custody of the hirer.

We would ask you to note that all pre-authorisation’s are released on the completion of the hire following a satisfactory review of the vehicle and its condition noting that any damaged caused to the vehicle while out on hire will be subject to cost with the relevant amount being removed from the pre-authorisation.

Typical deposits / pre-authorisations can range from £150 GBP to £1500 GBP dependent on the car type, age and driving experience of the driver and agreed excess.

Can I reduce my excess?

Green Motion Kaunas Bus and Train Station offers their rental customers the opportunity to reduce their excess by purchasing one of our excess reduction packages. Each package provides different benefits ranging from reduction in excess to zero excess. Please ask at the rental counter for more information.

Which payment and debit cards does Green Motion accept?

In most cases, each Green Motion location will accept most major credit cards including Visa and MasterCard and in some cases, American Express may be accepted.

In relation to debit cards (Visa), these are typically accepted for the payment of rentals but unfortunately we cannot secure a deposit / pre-authorisation using a debit card and as such require a valid credit card for the pre-authorisation of the deposit. In addition we are unable to accept cash either for the payment of the rental or for the security deposit.

We would ask you to note that in the event that we are unable to guarantee funds relating to the security deposit on your credit card we will be unable to rent a vehicle to you.

How long do I wait for the release of a deposit / pre-authorisation?

Green Motion Kaunas Bus and Train Station does not hold the pre-authorisation / deposit in our bank accounts. The pre-authorisation is a block of the agreed amount held against the credit card presented by the issuing bank. As soon as the vehicle has returned and we are happy with the condition of the vehicle, we action a release of the pre-authorisation.

The time taken by the issuing bank to release the pre-authorisation on the credit card varies immensely dependent on the bank and the country of issue. Typically, most pre-authorisations / deposits are released within 5 – 14 days from the return of the rental car.

In the event that you feel a pre-authorisation has not been released with the prescribed time frame it will be necessary for you to make direct contact with the issuing bank as Green Motion Kaunas Bus and Train Station has no jurisdiction in this matter.

Is roadside assistance including with my rental car?

In most cases, Green Motion Kaunas Bus and Train Station offers full roadside assistance and recovery within the cost of renting a vehicle. Further information on roadside assistance is available at the counter prior to renting.

What happens if my journey is delayed?

In most cases we will reserve your car until you arrive for up to 2 hours from the original pick up time. It is important that you make direct contact with the branch if you feel that your delay will exceed 2 hours to avoid us treating the rental as a “no show” and us reselling the rental car.

What happens if I arrive at the rental office outside office hours?

Green Motion Kaunas Bus and Train Station's opening hours are from 08:00 to 20:00. Discover Kaunas

Kaunas is a contrasting paradise - it is an elegantly ageing town on one side but also a carefree party and university town on the other.

The locals are more laid back then those in the capital Vilnius and the town has a more alternative feel. Early morning's on Saturdays and Sundays sees the main streets of Kaunas full of life!

There are also plenty of restaurants to choose from with a variety of choice on offer – from Mexican to Chinese to Indian, Kaunas has a restaurant for every flavour.

During your stay in Kaunas, we would recommend that you include the following destinations into your travel itinerary:

  1. The medieval Kaunas Castle is a gothic styled gem. The castle was built in the 13th century and even though much of it has been restored the majority of it has been left intact. The castle is spread over 5 spaces – we particularly recommend visiting the dungeons. You can even slip on a pair of heavy iron chains and imagine what life would have been like for one of the castle’s villains.
  2. You can’t go to Kaunas without experiencing Kaunas Old Town. Within this sector you can visit the ruins of Kaunas Castle, the Cathedral, Kaunas Town Hall and several museums. After a day of sight-seeing, we would recommend finding yourself a nice café / restaurant in the Old Town area, do some people watching, enjoy some wine and relax! But you won’t have too much time to relax as Old Town never sleeps with a lively night life each weekend.
  3. If you want the best advantage point to view the city, then you need to head to the Aleksotas district which begins immediately after the Nemunas river. Aleksotas was actually considered a separate town from Kaunas until 1919 and up until this point Aleksotas was using a different calendar which was 2 weeks head of Kaunas – they managed to sync with other though! If you venture to near the funicular upper station, you can see most of the historical gems of the city. It’s well worth the climb!
